7 tips for trailblazing spouses!

Updated: Jun 12

Moving to the Nordics can be an exciting and daunting experience, especially if you’ve agreed to do this with, or for your partner. Often referred to as the “trailing spouse,” this term fails to capture the true spirit of these adventurous individuals who take a risk to support their loved ones in pursuing their dreams. Let’s instead call them the “trailblazing spouse.”

The trailblazing spouse embarks on a journey that requires them to leave their comfort zone and adapt to a new environment. They might have come here seeking a better work-life balance, more family time, or to explore new horizons. Whatever the reason, the trailblazing spouse deserves recognition for their courage and resilience.

However, this journey can also be challenging, and here are some things to keep in mind as a trailblazing spouse.

  1. Finding work can be tough, especially if you haven’t studied in the country where you’re living. In Norway, for example, many jobs require fluency in Norwegian, and without a degree from a Norwegian university, it can be challenging to break into the job market. However, don’t be discouraged. You might find that your international experience is highly valued, so highlight it in your CV and cover letter.

  2. Co-working spaces and networking events are great places to connect with people who share your professional interests. If your partner has any old networks, they might be able to introduce you to people who can help you get started. Building business relationships is crucial, and it might lead to opportunities that you hadn’t considered before.

  3. Your international experience is a valuable asset. Use it to your advantage by highlighting it in your job search and during interviews. Employers value candidates who bring a fresh perspective and have experience working in diverse environments.

  4. Don’t think you have a network? Yes you do! Your network is everyone from someone you meet at your partner’s work, a neighbour, at your language class to the local shop owner. Approach networking with a genuine interest in building connections and offering support to others. Networking is a two-way street, and building relationships based on mutual trust and shared interests can lead to valuable opportunities in the new country.

  5. Finally, don’t expect your partner to fully understand your journey. They might be busy with work, and they might not be able to relate to your experiences. However, connecting with other trailblazing spouses who have been in your position can help you gain perspective and find support. It’s also an opportunity to educate your partner on what you’re going through and how they can support you.

Being a trailblazing spouse is an adventure filled with challenges and rewards. By taking the time to build your own community, highlighting your international experience, and connecting with others who have been in your position, you can make the most of this journey. So embrace the adventure, and blaze your trail!
